In order to sell an item to a customer you must first gain his trust, convince him that he needs your product and convince him that your website is safe.

However in order for your cross selling to be successful you must ensure that
1) The products you are offering are highly related to what the customer is about to buy
2) Adding the new product to the cart is as easy as possible
3) There is some kind of benefit for buying both products together
After the customer clicks on buy now he is redirected to page that asks him whether he wants the related product or not. If he clicked yes then he will be charged for both if he clicked no then he will only be charged for the first product.
One of the important things you should be aware of is that the customer hates to be forced to make a decision that’s why you must make the “No, thanks” option the selected one, else the customer will think that you are trying to force him to buy more.
Successful online selling happens when you motivate the customer to buy more of your products and letting him take the decisions himself instead of just chasing him to buy more.
By implementing cross selling you will experience a great increase in your sales overnight so what are you waiting for?? Don't worry about adding an additional step to the checkout process. Customers are used to make 6 steps before finally completing the checkout. if you remained below the norms then customers won't notice any difference.
