How much does Google Adsense pay?

I have three websites running Adsense. According to my online experience and to what I read it appears that Google’s Adsense revenue fluctuates wildly based on your site’s keywords. You could make 10 dollars a day from 500 impressions and you can make the same amount from 5000 impressions.

It all depends on the keywords your articles are targeting. For example in my stock market related website I get some clicks that cost more than 4 dollars while in my self help website I get lots of clicks that are as low as 0.01 dollar.

Don't try to search for the percentage of money Google takes out of every click because this is undisclosed information. Even if you found someone talking about your share of the ad revenue its going to be only a wild guess since Google wants this info to remain private.

Can I make a living from Adsense?

Yes you can, making 40, 100 or even 200 dollars a day is possible but only if your website gets a large amount of traffic. Without significant traffic your Adsense revenues will always remain below the 5 dollar/day threshold.

Building traffic is not as hard as it seems, actually its not hard at all, I get more than 450,000 visits each month to the website that I developed 2 years ago. Those people who make more than 10K per month (and i am one of them) never depend on Adsense alone but they use lots of other Ad networks and affiliate programs to reach these numbers.

Should I target higher paying keywords?

You should only target keywords that are related to your website other than that your website itself will get no visitors in the near future. For example in my self help website I can target the keyword “depression treatment” because it brings more money but I should never target the keyword “stock market” because visitors will be pissed off.

People who target highly paying keywords that aren’t related to their websites might make small amounts of money on the short term but sooner or later their online website will fail and people will abandon it.

Some smart people might try to create a website that targets a certain niche that has highly paying keywords. For example assuming that the keyword "herbal medicine" brings lots of money someone might start a website about herbal medicines. So what will be his fate? Complete failure!!

But why?? because unless he knows well what he writes about, knows how to deliver real value and unless his website has a strong competitive advantage no one will visit it. You can't just start a website because you want to earn money but you must start a website because of wanting to earn money in exchange for the value you will give to your readers (see my article Making money from a website for more information on this topic).
