The social proof theory states that people will return to others for guidance when they are not sure of the actions they should do. This means that if a large number of people are doing something then lots of those who don’t know what do to will follow them.

That’s why popular people become even more popular and that’s why popular websites keep growing and growing. People believe that if a certain website is getting a big number of visitors then it must be good enough and so they become fans of it too!!

Lots of internet marketers understand this fact and use the social proof theory by displaying the number of visits their websites get or the number of twitter followers. (see Social proof examples in blogging).

But when it comes to starting a new forum everyone will find your forum empty and so no one will be interested to post a question in it!! After all why would someone post a question in ghost forum if the main intention behind asking the question is getting an answer?

How to attract people to my forum

In order to attract people to your forum you must first populate your forum so that visitors can find your forum interesting enough.

But how can this be done provided that you don't have any traffic?? First of all you will have to create a social group on any website that allows that such as Facebook or yahoo groups. Once you are done you can start inviting people to the group and you will be amazed how easily you will attract those who are interested in the topic.

Don’t make the mistake of creating a group called “Join my lovely forum” but instead give people their needs without mentioning your forum. For example if your forum was about animals then start a group called "animal lovers" then ask people to join it.

After you collect some decent members to your “Animal lovers” group you can then tell them that you have created a forum especially for that topic.

Lots of people will join your forum and make posts because they are already interested in that topic which will make your forum more attractive to new comers.
