These advices will never work

I really feel disappointed when i see a website telling people that building a popular website requires posting comments on blogs, creating a newsletter or even submitting their website to directories.

While steps may be needed in certain stages in marketing still they are never going to make your website popular, at least if used alone.

Branding can make your site unbeatable

Why would people want to visit your website with the presence of millions of similar ones?
the only reason that would make people do that is if they found that your website has something different that other websites doesn't have.

Why would someone buy coke instead of any other drink?
Why do people pay 400 dollars for Apple's Iphone?

Those companies have successfully built brands in such a way that they have differentiated themselves from competition. (see How branding can move your site away from competition).

With the presence of millions of copycats around your good content can be stolen, your secrets can be known and your business can be duplicated but the only thing people can't mimic easily is your brand. You can easily establish a new restaurant that looks and feels like MacDonalds but will it be MacDonalds in the consumer's eye?

Of course not, because MacDonalds has built a strong brand.

How to build your online brand

The choice of the logo, slogan and the site's design aren't the way to build a brand but they are just helpful tools that you must use along the way, instead, building a brand requires having really something different than other sites.

Brands are built upon superior and remarkable products and not the opposite. A company can rarely brand a weak product or a copied one but instead it creates a brand to promote an already existing strong product.

So the key point is having a website that is different than all other websites. You must have remarkable content in order to survive and build your brand successfully else you will be swollen by another site that successfully managed to build its brand.
