What is a conversion rate?

The conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who complete the final goal you want to them to complete by visiting your website compared to the website’s overall visitors. For example if your website is selling an Ebook then the converstion rate for the website will be the percentage of people who buy the Ebook compared to the website’s overall visitors.

Conversion rates usually range from 2 to 8 percent with 3% being very common among online retailers. If you managed to increase the conversion rate from 2% to 4% then you would double your website’s earning without bringing extra traffic. So traffic alone doesn’t bring the money but it’s the combination of traffic and the conversion rate that helps you make money from your website.

How to increase conversion rate in a website

Before learning how to increase the conversion rate in your website you must first determine the phase that the consumer passes through that has the least conversion rate. For example if you sell an Ebook on your website then the conversion rate can be divded into two parts:

  • Phase I:The phase where the consumer visits your site but doesn’t reach the selling page
  • Phase II:The phase where the consumer visits the selling page buy doesn’t make a purchase

      If the number of people visiting the selling page is 1% of the site’s total visitors and the number of people buying from the selling page after reaching it is 5% then you have a problem with Phase I. in such a case increasing the site’s overall conversion rate requires you to help more people locate the sales page in an easier way.

      On the other hand, if lots of people reach the sales page, lets say 5% of the site’s visitors, but only 1% of those who reach the page make a purchase then your selling page should be replaced with a more convincing one.

      • Order security: Consumers won’t make an online purchase before they are assured that their orders are secure. You can add logo or an image that shows how the order will be securely processed
      • Minimize the steps required:The online consumer gets bored easily, make sure that buying a product from your website involves the fewest number of clicks possible
      • Link to the selling page from every page: If your website have many pages then make sure that a link to the selling page is present on every page.       • Advertise your product in every article :If you have an article website then make sure to mention your product at least once in each article
      • Remove all distractions from selling pages:Visitors can easily leak away by clicking on links that exist on the selling pages. Make sure you remove all unnecessary links
      • Make the sales page short: I am sure you have seen those selling pages that are 10 feet long. Those are the most popular form of selling pages and are the least effective ones too, your selling page should be simple and to the point.
      • Avoid looking like others:Consumers have learned to ignore repetitive patterns and so if your selling page looks like the millions present on the internet then most probably it will be ignored by most of them.
