I have recently read an article that described how Procter and gamble managed to sell razor blades to Indians who sometimes prefer to leave their beards unshaven. All what Procter and gamble did was sparking online discussions about how the beard affects the level of attractiveness of men and people did the rest.

As the results starting coming up lots of men discovered that women will regard them as more attractive if they shaved their beards and the result was a massive increase for razor blades sales in India!!!

How to use people’s needs to sell them your products?

If you want someone to give you his money in exchange for your product then you must show him that your product will help him fulfill one of his emotional needs. As you saw Procter and gamble used the need of being attractive and associated it with shaving.

For example, If you are selling a weight loss product then you shouldn’t only focus on telling the person how fast he will lose weight using your product but you should also tell him how attractive he will appear after losing weight and how his distorted self image can affect his self confidence. As you remind the person with his deep emotional needs he will feel more like wanting your product and the chance of buying it will increase.

Why don’t I buy the same product somewhere else?

If you managed successfully to convince the person that he needs the product then that’s only have of the job because he might buy a similar product somewhere else.

For example if you was convinced someone that losing weight is crucial for him he might try another weight loss product other than yours, after all you motivated him to lose weight but not to buy from you.

Here comes the use of the competitive advantage or the advantage your product has that other products don’t have. For example if your product can let him lose weight faster, with less pain or without any health risks then you can inform him about this advantage and he will certainly buy from you. In short let people have a need for the product by reminding them of their emotional needs then tell them that your product is the best in its category and you will sell to them successfully.
