The day I started using upselling techniques in my website it experienced something around 30% increase in sales overnight!!
Before I implemented upselling I read an article that said that upselling can result in instant increase in sales but actually I didn’t believe what I read until I tried it myself.
Not everyone who implements upselling will get the same great results because unless he becomes aware of the right way to use this method he won’t be able to make the maximum benefit out of it.
In this article I will explain the best way to use upselling so that you get the largest percentage of sales increase overnight.
In order to make the best of upselling you should combine it with cross selling. While the first method asks the customer to buy ad ons for a product the second asks the customer to buy related products.
In my website I use both methods together by asking the customer whether he prefers to buy an additional product and get a discount or not. The additional product I offer is usually a one that is highly related to the one he bought. For example my most popular product bundles are “The getting over depression book + how to get over anyone book” and “The how to get over anyone book + How to make someone love you book”
Whenever a customer buys the breakup book I ask him if he would like to the take the depression book too and most of them respond saying yes!!
The key to successful upselling is not to only offering additional products to the customer but its offering highly related products to the ones he bought.
Lots of people ask the customer whether he want the additional product or not without showing him the benefits of owning it. One of the main reason I upsell successfully is that I add three lines in the new offer page in order to convince the customer that he needs the other product. (see Elevator pitch for online sales)
For example when someone orders the “How to get over anyone book” I send him to the page having the following three lines:
Breakups are usually associated with depression, The depression book can help you kill the depression that accompany breakups, want to buy both books and get a discount?
After I remind the customer of his needs he feels like buying the additional product and I make more sales. The difference between the way I upsell and between others who do it less successfully is that same difference between:
1) Asking a customer who bought French fries whether he needs coke or not and
2) Telling a customer who bought French fries that he might need coke because French fries will make him feel thirsty.
