How to market a product on the internet

I make a five digit monthly income selling Ebooks on the internet. One of the common mistakes new internet marketers make is believing that the internet is a separate market that follows a different approach than the real world follows.

Just like any other product in the real world, marketing a product on the internet requires being aware of the four ps, the competitive advantage and the different marketing strategies.

Anyone can use Google adwords to display ads instantly to people browsing the internet, but do all people who display ads manage to sell products? Of course not because in order to sell products online you must do real marketing instead of using what people call "techniques".

Steps to marketing a product on the internet

Below are generic steps that can be applied to all types of products that you want to market on the internet:

  • Determine the product’s competitive advantage or create one for it: What makes this product different from the other ones? Is it more durable? More effective? Or Easier to use? The only way to sell a product successfully these days in between the fierce competition is to find the product’s competitive advantage (see beating the competition in the online world)
  • Find the right niche for your product: Mass marketing has died long ago, you can no longer sell a one size fits all product but instead you must find the right niche who are going to be interested in your product, for example 14-19 years old teens who suffer from sports injuries. Niche marketing won’t only help you find the right people to sell to but will also move you away from competition since your products will be regarded as specialized ones.   • Find the communication medium: Lots of internet marketers start by this step which is finding a way to reach potential customers online without having a marketing strategy and that’s why they fail. Whether it’s a blog, a website or an online ad the role of the communication medium should be delivering the marketing message that includes the competitive advantage to the right customers. People who just start websites with the aim of selling products to anyone online and without having a clear marketing messages are doomed to fail.
  • Reinforcing the marketing message by constant repetition : in my article How to become famous on the internet I explained the concept of subconscious mind programming which is based on the fact that someone’s mind can be programmed to believe into something though repetition. After you find the right medium that will deliver your message make sure that the message gets repeated enough times so that people become programmed to buy your products

Delivering the marketing message through the communication medium

The communication medium can be in the form of a blog, a website, display ads or a social networking website.

Don’t use one communication medium and ignore the others because this won’t help you program the target market with your message. Have a unified message the delivers your competitive advantage to people throughout the different mediums.

Some people think that having a logo is enough to start marketing a product online but in fact the logo is nothing more than a tool to remind the people of the competitive advantage of a product. (see How to build your brand online).
